And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.
But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.
And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.

Jessie Jacob is a twentieth century Irish Friend, a member of Tramore Meeting, and the grandmother of Philip Jacob. This piece was written in 1954.
We live, physically, in a world surrounded and enveloped by air – atmosphere – without which we could not live. Our spiritual selves live surrounded and enveloped by love, the love of God. As I see it, this love fills the universe, but like air, it is invisible. It is the atmosphere of our spiritual selves. Just as we take no notice of this air around us, we take it for granted, so mostly we do not perceive or respond to the Love in which we live. It is there, but we don’t realize it. In so far as we do perceive or respond, we open ourselves to God’s love and power and we become fellow workers.
Recent readings might have us conclude that somehow 'work' is bad. Of course we can get obsessed with work and many do, but equally it is important to work not only to eat or in part define ourselves but also to cooperate with God in the unfolding and eternal task of creation.
